Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a type of chronic kidney disease, also known as diabetic nephropathy. You kidneys have several important functions in your body:

They help control blood pressure and produce certain hormones
Over time, diabetes can cause damage to your kidneys, which prevents them from functioning normally. This can cause waste products to build up in your blood, eventually it can lead to the need for dialysis or a kidney transplant.
