12 Hospitals, Half With Dialysis Care Connections, Which CKD Patients Might Want to Avoid

In general, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and Dialysis patients try to avoid hospitals and hospitalization as much as they possibly can. Still, some patients conducting Dialysis are encouraged to visit their Doctors as much as four (4) times a month, and they "enter the hospital six (6) times more often" than similar groups who don't have Chronic Kidney Failure, suggested Paul Eggers (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases). Hence, entering the hospital can be inevitable in some case. However, if patients have the option, they may want to avoid these twelve (12) hospitals (half having direct connections to Kidney Failure and Dialysis) with very high infection rates according to ConsumerReports.org.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was quoted, "Every year, an estimated 648,000 people in the U.S. develop infections during a hospital stay, and about 75,000 die with one of those infections." That is twice the number of people who die yearly in car crashes, and since Chronic Kidney Disease patients conducting Dialysis have very weak immune systems, they have a high risk of picking up infections.

The following 12 low-scoring hospitals performed poorly across all five types of hospital infections, based on data they provided to federal government agencies. Dr. Doris Peter (Director of the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center) said, "Getting a low score across all five infection categories is a red flag that the hospital is not focusing proper resources on infection control." The hospitals include:
- Brooklyn Hospital Center, Brooklyn, N.Y.
- Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, Ill.
- Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services, New Albany, Ind.
- Fremont-Rideout Health Group, Marysville, Calif.
- Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers., Evergreen Park, Ill.
- Mercy St. Anne Hospital, Toledo, Ohio
- Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, N.J.
- Rockdale Medical Center, Conyers, Ga.
- St. Petersburg General Hospital, Saint Petersburg, Fla.
- The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington, Conn.
- UF Health Jacksonville, Jacksonville, Fla.
- Venice Regional Bayfront Health, Venice, Fla.

"UF Health Nephrology and Hypertension – Jacksonville specializes in the diagnosis and therapy of kidney diseases."
Patients should know that Consumer Reports contacted all 12 hospitals who replied and suggested that they were taking steps to improve. Still, protect yourself and make sure that your Healthcare Team washes their hands and changes their gloves before interacting with you in any way. Also, wash your hands and try not to touch your eyes, mouth or nose if avoidable while in the hospital which can make it easier for germs to infect your body.
