The Best Exercise In The World For Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Conducting Dialysis

The Nation's leading Dialysis provider Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) announced on Thursday, August 28th, 2014 that they will be working with Lakshmi Voelker (noted author, lecturer and yoga instructor) to create a “chair yoga” program specifically for Dialysis patients!

Some may see this announcement and think, "So, what does that mean for me?" Well, if you are a Dialysis patient, especially Hemodialysis, it means a lot. Yoga can increase blood circulation (limits clotting), aid heart function (heart failure is leading cause of death in Chronic Kidney Disease patients), lower stress levels, improve strength, increase mental clarity and flexibility. However to most, yoga may be quite intimidating, this is only worse for Chronic Kidney Disease patients who may think, "I just don't bend that way!"

While classic yoga may be physically demanding, chair yoga offers similar benefits with far less rigor. Don't you think that this is perfect for Dialysis patients who have physical limitations that prevent them from easily moving up and down from the floor or standing for a full hour?

Chair yoga is a gentle style of yoga you can do from a seated position that also incorporates the strength building, breathing, and mind-body benefits of a traditional class. Spinal Twist - Sit facing forward place your left hand on the outside of your right knee. Place your right arm over the back of the chair (if possible). Breathe in and breathe out as you twist to the right. Turn your head as well. Push against your right knee to create more leverage. Breathe normally and hold the position. Release slowly and come back to facing forward and repeat on the opposite side. This helps to increase circulation and flexibility in the spine.

Knee Squeeze - Breathe out completely then breathe in with both hands around the front of your knee pull your knee to your chest, while holding in your breath. Lower your head to your knee as much as possible, hold for a few seconds, and release slowly while breathing out. Repeat with your right side. This exercise helps to relax your lower back, and improve digestion and breathing.

Leg Lifts – Great to strengthen Dialysis patients legs and lower back, as well as improving the circulation to their legs and feet. Go ahead and sit and hold each side of the chair for balance. Breathe out and breathe in as you lift your straightened left leg and flex your foot. Hold for a few seconds and then slowly breathe out while lowering your leg. Repeat the same for your right leg.

While Diabetics who have a difficult time conducting conventional exercises can also take advantage of this new, easier physical activity, it is an important point to remember for all patients to never push their body to the point that causes pain or injury. You will still get the benefit of the postures even if you are not very flexible. Also, before you begin any new physical activity, you should consult with your healthcare provider.
