There are over 600,000 Chronic Kidney Disease patients in the United States who are conducting Dialysis according to Dr. Emilio Poggio (Nephrologist at the Cleveland Clinic). Dialysis Treatment is particularly difficult because of side effects such as feeling wiped-out after treatments, Hypotension (Low Blood Pressure), headaches, light-headedness, and more. Also, Dialysis patients feel trapped and tethered to their Dialysis machines once they begin treatment sessions. While the Wearable Artificial Kidney has progressed as an alternative to traditional Dialysis options its harness-like design and heavy weight (ten pounds) have largely been a turnoff to many Chronic Kidney Disease patients. However, a new Backpack Artificial Kidney was recently presented at the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Week.

Nephrology News reported that a "backpack-like Wearable Artificial Kidney device, with a rear and vertical arrangement," is now being explored as an option for Dialysis patients. This backpack design would offer those with Chronic Kidney Disease more space for the components of an Artificial Wearable Kidney as well as cause less discomfort for the patient than a belt-like or harness-like device.

“With a backpack design, Hemodialysis patients would use their own personal device only, in which all the disposable components could be replaced with a unique cartridge, designed to be extremely easy to fit and dispose of,” said the researchers at Nephrology, Dialysis, and Transplantation, International Renal Research Institute. What's even more interesting is that the unique backpack shape can be re-arranged into a “sleep station” to perform night treatments as well.
