Some experts say that foods that may assist with sleep should contain Tryptophan, suggested Cable News Network (CNN). Tryptophan is an amino acid that has been connected with helping Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients snooze because once it enters the body, it's converted into two brain chemicals associated with sleep: Melatonin (helps regulate the body's natural sleep and wake cycles), and Serotonin (causes relaxation and drowsiness).

"Tryptophan is the reason why it is widely perceived that a Thanksgiving dinner causes drowsiness, because of the Tryptophan found in turkey," according to Dr. Donald Hensrud (Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program). However, other foods contain Tryptophan, and some have more Tryptophan than turkey.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends avoiding large meals too close to your bedtime as well as spicy foods and caffeine which have been associated with impaired sleep. It is alright to have a minor snack about an hour before bed on occasion, but patients should not make this a habit to avoid weight gain and discomfort.
