Celebrity Fitness and Health Professional, Samantha Chang reported in the Examiner on Monday, February 17th, 2014 that diets which are low-carbohydrate and high-fat do not just allow for weight loss, but also "reverse both heart disease and Type II Diabetes." If that were not shocking enough, professionals within the renal community have been touting the benefits of a low carbohydrate, moderate protein, high fat diet in Chronic Kidney Disease stages 3 to 5.

Whereas most health experts recommend for their patients to reduce saturated fat and its potential sources to minimize the risk of Cardiovascular events and possibly death, recent studies have found no significant associations between fresh meat intake and cardiovascular events. You should, however, be careful to select the right type of foods as processed meats were associated with a 70% increase in mortality for those with kidney disease.
Diets such as Atkins, Paleo and Ketogenic which promote high quality protein and saturated fats, the very fat many people with CKD or Diabetes are taught to avoid, raises good cholesterol and can be very tasty. Low carbohydrate diets were also found to produce a greater weight loss than other conventional diets.
What does this mean for the typical chronic patient on a Renal or Diabetic diet: Switch to an above listed diet and watch your life change for the better? Not at all! Instead, talk to your Dietitian about the benefits of following a stricter low-carbohydrate, moderate to high-protein, and high-fat diet.
