Support Talk Show's New Approach To Shed Light On Chronic Kidney Disease & Kidney Donation

Currently there are over 100,000 people waiting on the Kidney Transplant List, and more than 13 people die every day while waiting for their life saving kidney. That is why earlier this year, the Chronic Kidney Disease Community was in an uproar when they heard of the inaccurate statements made by, Kelly Ripa, a host on the Leading Syndicated Talk Show - LIVE with Kelly and Michael (approximately  4.4 million daily viewers).

Ms. Ripa stated, "I know people that have done this and gone through the process of being a Living Kidney Donor and they say that when a person has kidneys that don't work, when they receive a Kidney Transplant they feel 100% better whereas the donor feels 100% worse because they go from having functioning kidneys to half. It really changes." As previously reported, Kelly's comments may misinform her viewers and deter those who were previously considering from following through with much needed Kidney Donations.

Now, however, Dr. Phil McGraw,  has taken the exact opposite approach and outreached to the Kidney Community to highlight their struggle. On The Dr. Phil Show, Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall (Pfizer’s Chief Medical Officer) and Dr. Phil (host) sat down with 4 year Dialysis patient, and 2-time Kidney Transplant Recipient, Monica, who is currently waiting for her third Kidney Transplant, to discuss the physical and emotional challenges of life with Chronic Kidney Disease and while waiting on the Kidney Transplant List.

Monica discussed side effects with which most Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients can relate such as "High Blood Pressure, Chronic Anemia, Chronic Fatigue, Migraines, Gout," and "difficulty getting out of bed some days." Sharing the story of those who conduct regular Dialysis as well as suffer with Kidney Failure is critically important to let other healthier people know about the need patients have for a Kidney Transplant to lead a fuller and more complete life (video above).

Dr. Phil also has a viewership of approximately 4.4 million households daily, and his small segment on Chronic Kidney Disease may greatly assist patients in getting their message out to a wider audience of people and help counteract previous misconceptions about Chronic Kidney Disease, Kidney Failure, and Kidney Donation.

Dr. Phil made an excellent point when he said, "It makes such a big difference to not become isolated with this because if you do have the support groups, whether online or in person - through the hospital or community - whether it's a prayer partner or somebody that has a new article to read or whatever; it can make a huge difference."
