Many Chronic Kidney Disease patients are unable to accept a Kidney Transplant from their loved ones because the desired donor is considered to be too old. If a patient's mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, friends or extended family are over the age of 65, most are not even considered to be eligible for Living Kidney Donation or even donation after death (Deceased Kidney Donation). Most Kidney Transplant Centers' age cut-offs for Kidney Transplant Donors prevent quality kidneys from being available to patients, and according to new research, this may be a big and costly mistake for Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients.

A study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology suggested that the current age cut-offs appear to be arbitrary (based on random choice, rather than any reason or system). In fact, even kidneys from donors older than 80 years of age can function for years after transplantation, the study found.

Dr. Luigi Biancone said, “The results of this study support the use of extended criteria donors, even donors older than 80 years, but they have to be accurately selected and managed with dedicated protocols.” Now, given these findings, what can Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients do?

First, talk with your Kidney Transplant Team about your desire to investigate the idea of accepting a Kidney Transplant from an older donor. Also, work with your Healthcare Team to identify Transplant Centers that may consider testing older Living Kidney Donors on your behalf.
