Standard Drug Just Found To Be Better At Healing Foot Ulcers In CKD-Diabetic Patients

Foot ulcers is a risk factor that has been associated with early death in people with Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetes. Although Diabetes is a major cause of both Chronic Kidney Disease and foot ulcers, a previous study reported that a significant proportion of CKD patients conducting Hemodialysis without a diagnosis of diabetes also had risk factors that could lead to foot ulceration. Patients were twice as likely to have a diabetic foot ulcer heal within eight weeks when they were treated with a tissue repair drug, according to new research published on Tuesday February 26th, 2014 in Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM).

According to Harvard University Health Publications, a foot ulcer is simply "an open sore on the foot." It may be a shallow red crater that involves only the surface skin or a very deep crater that extends through the full thickness of the skin, involving tendons, bones and other deep structures. Foot ulcers are a common complication from Diabetes which can lead to hospitalization and lower limb amputation. In fact, up to 85% of amputations can be avoided by preventing or properly treating ulcers, according to the study's authors.

For the first time, this study showed that a common medicinal therapy can improve ulcer wound healing as opposed to current treatments that are more costly and less effective. In the controlled double-blinded (neither the researchers nor the participants know which drugs are being taken) study, 216 participants with uninfected foot ulcers were assigned to receive either the tissue repair drug Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) or a pill with no active ingredient (placebo). Participants received injections of either PDRN or a placebo for eight weeks and were monitored for an additional four weeks for any change in the ulcer.

37% of the patients who were treated with PDRN saw their foot ulcers completely healed within weeks as compared to less than 19% of the patients who received the placebo. What's more is that the study subjects reported few side effects from PDRN. Researchers said that the findings could "revolutionize" the treatment of harmful foot ulcers.
