Soy Foods (Eg. Tofu) Improve CKD & Dialysis Patients' Health & Longevity Contrary To Common Opinion

Sudden death is typically caused by a Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) and is "one of the leading causes of death in Dialysis patients," according to the United States Renal Data System. While Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients attempt to improve Heart Health by conducting light exercises such as walking and taking Heart Healthy medications; when it comes to their diets, it can be a bit more challenging since Dialysis patients are encouraged to increase their protein intake from foods such as beef which is also tied to Heart Failure. Although, most Dialysis patients avoid soy based foods such as Tofu, it may be a big mistake.

The Large Dialysis Organization, DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. said, "An adequate amount of protein is essential when you have Chronic Kidney Disease and are on Dialysis." The organization even recommended "Beef steak (4 ounces)" and "Hamburger patty (3 ounces)." Yet others suggest, "That red meat is strongly associated with Heart Failure is not new – but the cascade of events that leads from one to the other has only started to become clearer in recent years," said Alice G. Walton (Forbes Magazine). Hence, the dilemma: What should a Chronic Kidney Disease patient on Dialysis do to improve their overall health and longevity?"

Perhaps, they should consider including soy based foods in their diets. Many patients suggest that, "I would never eat soy foods because they are high in phosphorus, potassium, and sodium." Yet, this is not always the case. In fact DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. noted, "Consumption of soy foods, particularly soy protein, offers several benefits to people with Chronic Kidney Disease on Dialysis."

Soy can provide patients high quality protein similar to animal protein. However, it is typically defined as being healthier since unlike meat, soy is cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat. Also, rather than harming Heart Health, soy reduces Cardiovascular (Heart) Disease risk, inflammation, bad cholesterol, and even fats that are harmful to the heart.

Due to the fact that Dialysis patients are more likely than the general population to develop Heart Disease, they should discuss with their Dietitians about safely incorporating a moderate amount of high protein, soy based foods into their regular restricted diets to supplement red meats. Clearly, those who are allergic or sensitive to soy, and those with thyroid problems, should avoid soy based foods and drinks.
