Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients are all too familiar with Gout. It is a type of arthritis that can affect different body parts like the ears, small joints on the hands, wrists, ankles or knees. Symptoms frequently include acute pain, swelling, intense tenderness, and inflammation in the joints. The exact cause of Gout is unknown, but it may arise in Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients as a result of uric acid build-up in the body, lack of physical exercise because of Dialysis wipeout/washout (tiredness after Dialysis Treatment), excessive protein intake, and too much stress. 1. Fish Oil. Patients have noted that over time, fish oil can decrease their Gout attacks. This is likely due to the fact that fish oil is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation in Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients' bodies.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar. Another patient suggested a do-it-yourself Gout remedy that should be discussed with your Healthcare Team. She mentioned, "The acidity in apple cider vinegar will help relieve acute pain. You can also add honey to the remedy to boost the body’s anti-inflammatory response." Patients can consider mixing one teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar with a glass of water, and drink it when they experience Gout pain.
3.) Ginger Root. The anti-inflammatory properties present in ginger root can be very helpful in relieving pain and inflammation. There are many ways to enjoy ginger including raw or as a garnish on deserts, sweet side dishes (i.e. sweet potato), and to spruce-up a warm drink (i.e. coffee). However, Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients should not overconsume ginger because it is a blood thinner. Talk with your Dietitian about how much ginger you should consume.
4.) Ice Down. Applying an ice pack to the painful joint may help ease pain and inflammation. Wrap a bag of crushed ice (frozen peas will also do the trick) in a dish cloth and apply it to the area for 20 to 30 minutes at a time throughout the day while the pain persists.
5.) Chill Out. Try to relax since stress can aggravate Gout. Watch a movie, talk to a friend, read a book, listen to music, or just soak in a bathtub. Whatever helps you to remain calm.
6.) Revamp The Menu. Stop eating troublesome high-purine foods, such as shellfish, red meat, and gravies. Try to eat more fish, garlic, and cherries in moderation which contain good antioxidant properties to reduce inflammation.
