The number of Dialysis patients in the United States is rapidly growing. According to House.gov, "An estimated 650,000 Americans receive Dialysis in order to stay alive." What's worse is that life on Dialysis is very hard for patients who have to spend many hours conducting Dialysis Treatments, managing Anemia (low red blood cell count), contending with severe fatigue, recovering after treatment, traveling to doctors appointments, and meeting with specialists such as their Nephrologists (kidney doctor), Cardiologists (heart doctor), and other specialty physicians.  This can be financially burdensome, exhausting, and even lead to miscommunication and errors among healthcare professionals. That is why KidneyBuzz.com urges you to sign the below petition and show your support for H.R. 5506, the Dialysis PATIENT Demonstration Act which is expected to significantly improve health outcomes, reduce hospitalizations and readmissions, and increase the quality of life for Dialysis patients.

The full title of the Bill is, the Dialysis Patient Access to Integrated-Care, Empowerment, Nephrologists, and Treatment (PATIENT) Demonstration Act, and if passed it is expected to be one of the most significant modern day pieces of legislation regarding the Chronic Kidney Disease Community. The Bill will be used to establish a program where medical teams of doctors, led by a Nephrologist, provide holistic management for all of a patient’s health care needs. It also offers eligible Dialysis patients Kidney Transplant counseling. The idea is that better-coordinated care will spare Dialysis patients time, money, and multiple trips in and out of various doctors’ offices.

More importantly, this legislation is expected to improve the quality of life and longevity among Chronic Kidney Disease patients conducting Dialysis. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (introduced H.R. 5506) noted, "By giving providers better tools to coordinate care and for treatment, these patients will be better served and see better outcomes."

This is great news because it shows that our Representatives in Congress are actually listening to the issues of Chronic Kidney Disease patients across the country and taking action. The Dialysis PATIENT Demonstration Act should be seen as a first step towards improving kidney care and more broadly reassessing federal policies to help Chronic Kidney Disease patients, especially those on Dialysis lead better, longer, and more fulfilling lives. If you support H.R. 5506, then sign the below petition and ask your member of Congress to endorse the Dialysis PATIENT Demonstration Act. It only takes 30 seconds to have your voice heard!
