It is an unfortunate fact that the leading cause of death in people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is not CKD itself or even Dialysis, it is Heart Disease. Those with Type II Diabetes also suffer with a high rate of death due to Heart Disease. A new study published by the American Diabetes Association, has demonstrated that unsaturated fat consumption plays a major role in preventing abdominal fat accumulation in the body, as well as improving muscle mass development and combating diseases such as obesity, Type II Diabetes, and Heart Disease.

Swedish researchers from Uppsala University revealed that different types of fat in your diet not only influence cholesterol levels in the blood, but also determines where the fat will be stored in the body. Results showed that the surplus consumption of saturated fat caused a significantly greater increase in the amount of fat surrounding the internal organs (visceral fat) when compared to those who consumed more unsaturated fat.
Though both groups gained weight, the increase in muscle mass among the group fed by saturated fat was three times less than those who gained weight from unsaturated fat. "Liver fat and visceral fat seems to contribute to a number of disturbances in metabolism. These findings can therefore be important for individuals with metabolic diseases such as diabetes,” said the study director Ulf Risérus.
The new findings suggest that the unsaturated fat composition will likely play a role in preventing or improving obesity, Type II Diabetes, and Chronic Kidney Disease. Earlier studies have also concluded that people who replaced saturated fat in their diet with unsaturated fat could reduce their risk of Heart Disease by 19%.
Foods containing unsaturated fats include avocado, soybean, canola, and olive oils. Meat products contain both saturated and unsaturated fats. However, boneless and skinless chicken, pork tenderloin, round-tip roast, round steak, chuck shoulder pot roast, top loin, and trimmed leg of lamb are all great meat choices that are low in saturated fats.
