Revolutionary Finding To Create Blood Cells May Improve Outcomes For CKD And Diabetic Patients

MSN News as well as Forbes published that "Artificial red blood cells [that are] good enough to be transfused into patients have been developed for the first time," on Monday April 14th, 2014. If you have not jumped for joy yet I can understand. Let me explain why this is great news for those with Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetes because it's not obvious.

Firstly, Anemia is a condition that develops when your blood lacks the necessary healthy red blood cells (hemoglobin) for the body to function properly, and leaves Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetic patients feeling tired and sluggish. Although Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease does not directly cause Anemia, certain complications and conditions associated with the diseases can contribute to it.

For example, Nerve Damage (Neuropathy) which is common in both those with Kidney Disease and Diabetes can contribute to the development of Anemia. Certain oral drugs taken by patients can raise the risk of developing Anemia. Diabetics as well as those with Chronic Kidney Disease can also have Anemia as a result of not eating well or having a condition that interferes with the absorption of nutrients.

Hence, it is safe to say that Diabetics and Chronic Kidney Disease patients are at a high risk for severe Anemia which may cause the need for a Blood Transfusion. The chance of acquiring a serious infection such as HIV or Hepatitis with Human Blood Transfusions is as high as 17%. "Man-Made Blood" on the other hand, would be "free of infection." Researchers suggest that, "In the recent past, both Hepatitis and HIV have been spread through transfusions."

Secondly, the new source of blood supply could consist entirely of "Type O Negative" blood which can be transfused into ANY patient. This is currently quite rare, as only 7% of donors have Type O Negative.

The announcement is the latest in the relatively new field of regenerative medicine which has already seen the development of artificial skin, liver, bone, cartilage and blood vessels. With rapid movement like this, Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetic patients can be hopeful that organs such as Kidneys could be available to them within their life-time.
