Great news for Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients eagerly awaiting a Kidney Transplant, Surgeons in the United States transplanted a record number of organs, including kidneys, according to data from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The question most Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients likely have is, "Why haven't I received my transplant yet?"

Let's be clear, there are over 100,000 patients on the Kidney Transplant Waiting List at any given time and only a fraction are fortunate enough to receive Kidney Transplants. For instance, in 2016 only 13,431 (9.6% increase) Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients were lucky enough to get kidneys, and 5,630 of those transplants were provided from selfless Living Kidney Donors (7,801 Kidney Transplants were from deceased/dead donors), suggested Renal and Urology News.

Dr. David Klasse (Chief Medical Officer for UNOS), suggested that the nearly 10% increase in donation is likely caused due to a number of factors including:

- Increase in overdoses as a result of the U.S. narcotic epidemic.
- Increased use of kidneys harvested from patients following cardiac death and not just from those who suffer brain death which has been the traditional source of deceased donor kidneys.
- Improved Kidney Procurement Organization policies which are now being used to broaden the population of kidney donors that Kidney Transplant Centers are willing to consider for donation. They are willing to use kidneys that in the past had been discarded.

While the increase in Kidney Donation does show good progress, it is not enough since nearly 5,000 patients die every year on the Kidney Transplant Waiting List without ever receiving a call. A huge area of opportunity is generous, selfless Living Kidney Donation.
