1.) Plan ahead. If you typically enjoy a drink of cider or cranberry juice to celebrate with your friends, be sure to limit your fluid intake throughout the day so that you do not suffer fluid overload which may lead to congestive heart failure.

2.) Travel Safely. If possible stay off the roads even if you are sober. According to the Dr. Oz blog, "To some folks, New Year’s Eve – day and night – is an excuse to imbibe (drink) starting at daytime office parties, with neighbors, at home and so on." Dr. Oz continued, "When I worked in the ER, we would start treating victims of auto accidents involving intoxicated drivers early in the morning on New Year’s Eve, continuing throughout the daytime into the night." If you do travel, remain alert of your surroundings and how others are acting. Stay away from those who are behaving erratic or out of control.

3.) Be careful with open flames. If you're burning candles, incense or oil burners, remember to extinguish them before you turn in or before you leave the room they are burning in.

4.) Stick to your diet. The hors d'oeuvres and great tasting foods which do not match your Renal or Diabetic diet restrictions will likely tempt you. Do not fall for the trap! Whether you are going over to a friend's New Year's Eve party or entertaining friends at your home share at least a few Chronic Kidney Disease and/or Diabetic-Friendly recipes which you can enjoy within moderation. 5.) If you decide to drink do not mix caffeine and alcohol. Although most Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients are encouraged to skip the alcohol on New Year's Eve, if you do drink (after consulting with your Nephrologists) proceed with extreme caution and do not mix caffeinated energy drinks with alcohol because it can disrupt your heart’s rhythm. It may be a recipe for disaster. Also, Dr. Oz notes that, "contrary to what some believe, coffee doesn’t sober you up.” As you likely know alcohol can also lead to dizziness, sleepiness, headaches, stomach upset and more so you may choose to opt for a cider or a safe 100% pomegranate/cranberry juice instead.
