What appears to be an aspect of the Renal (Kidney) Diet which is most ironic is that late stage Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients require increased protein intake due to the nutrients removed during Dialysis Treatments. Yet, the best source of protein, meat, is high in phosphorus. Scientific researchers have openly suggested that phosphorus is more easily absorbed by the body when taken in from meat products.

Now, the Journal of Renal Nutrition has found that boiling sliced meat in a pressure cooker using water and then discarding the cooking liquid may provide a good way for Dialysis patients to reduce phosphorus levels while maintaining adequate protein intake. Why sliced meat? Well, researchers suggested that the muscle fibers in sliced meat were able to flex easily so phosphorus could slip out of the meat and into the liquid. That is why it is important for Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients to discard the cooking solution which contains high levels of leached phosphorus.
