Well, the answer is, "Yes." Researchers recently reported that they have successfully grown kidneys in a lab, connected them to "excretion systems," and noted that they "function and grow properly" in both rats and pigs. This is a massive step forward for the over 600,000 patients in the United States conducting Dialysis including the 120,000+ people waiting on the Kidney Transplant List.

While Researchers were able to develop the scaffold of a kidney in a lab, the kidney would not excrete urine. Now, this obstacle looks as though it is being overcome since lab-grown kidneys seem to function properly in tested animals.

Researchers wrote in the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, "We have successfully generated functional kidneys from human stem cells." Chris Mason (University College London) said, "The science looks strong." Still, while the breakthrough findings seem very promising, the technology is not ready for Human Trials.

Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients should be very excited about these findings because the results suggest that technology is moving closer to a lab-grown kidney which is able to be successfully implanted into humans. If you would like additional updates on the development of this research including if and when human trials are expected to commence within the coming years, then complete the below form.
