High Blood Pressure can be dangerous and increase the risk of bad outcomes such as Cardiovascular Disease which may trigger stroke, heart attack and premature death. Cardiovascular disease means having problems with your heart and the blood vessels throughout your body, including brain, lungs and legs. Over time, the blood vessels that bring blood to the heart and brain can become blocked from a buildup of cells, fat and cholesterol; reducing blood flow to the heart and brain which causes major complications and even death.
The leading cause of death in those with Chronic Kidney Disease, specifically Dialysis patients is in fact Cardiovascular Disease. It can be limited by addressing underlying issues associated with the heart and blood vessel dysfunction such as High Blood Pressure with which 60% of Hemodialysis and 30% Peritoneal Dialysis patients still struggle. Equally as striking, most patients are on Blood Pressure lowering medications when they first start Dialysis.
The DASH Diet may be a highly effective solution to cut High Blood Pressure for many, suggested Dr. Frank M. Sacks (Harvard University). With research that was sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health, the DASH diet plan was developed to lower High Blood Pressure without medication, according to Dashdiet.org. Now, numerous studies have highlighted that the DASH diet also reduces the risk of some Cancers, Stroke, Heart Failure, and improves management of Diabetes.
When Nutrition Action asked Dr. Sacks if the DASH diet could cure High Blood Pressure in four (4) weeks, he candidly responded, "In many people yes." He then continued, "The Dash Diet is actually superior to drug treatment if you also cut salt, as we did in a 2001 study called DASH-Sodium."
Needless to say, do not alter or change your diet or medication regimen in any way without first talking to your Dietitian and/or Healthcare Team, especially those on Dialysis. In order to incorporate helpful elements of the Dash Diet into your existing Renal or Diabetic diet, it will likely have to be tailored to your specific needs. However, to give you a general idea of the Dash Diet, it focuses on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, and lean meats. Specific general serving suggestions are as follows:
- Grains: 6 to 8 servings a day (1/2 cup cooked cereal, rice or pasta)
- Vegetables: 4 to 5 servings a day (1 cup raw leafy green vegetables or 1/2 cup cut-up raw or cooked vegetables)
- Fruits: 4 to 5 servings a day (1 medium fruit or 1/2 cup fresh, frozen or canned fruit or 4 ounces of juice)
- Dairy: 2 to 3 servings a day (1 cup skim or 1 percent milk)
- Lean meat, poultry and fish: 6 or fewer servings a day (1 oz. cooked skinless poultry, seafood or lean meat or 1 egg)
- Fats and oils: 2 to 3 servings a day (1 teaspoon soft margarine)
- Sweets: 5 or fewer a week (1/2 cup sorbet)
Again, before starting any diet including the DASH Diet, speak to your Dietitian so that s/he can take your special dietary restrictions into consideration. Typically, Dialysis patients are not advised to follow a DASH Diet due to high potassium and phosphorus content. Thus, the ENTIRE DASH Diet SHOULD NOT BE USED by Chronic Kidney Disease patients on Dialysis. Still, parts of this diet as well as appropriate substitutes may go a very long way in addressing High Blood Pressure and improving survival rates in Chronic Kidney Disease patients including those at End Stage, ONLY WITH THE HELP OF THEIR DIETITIAN.
