Imbalance Of Federal Funding May Be Adversely Impacting CKD & Dialysis Patient Health Outcomes

Did you know that according to Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Advocate and Dialysis Patient, Jim Myers, there is a large disparity in funding for necessary Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis research to improve a patient's quality of life? He suggested that on average only approximately $30.00 for research is assigned per person diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease which is the lowest of all major diseases that were referenced including  Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) - $4,000 per patient, Cancer - $534 per patient, Alzheimer’s - $101 per patient, Heart Disease - $61 per patient, and Diabetes - $39 per patient.

The above listed figures are not to suggest that one disease is more important than another. However, it is in the best interest of the Chronic Kidney Disease Community to ensure that they have the appropriate funding to progress research as well as realize and support breakthroughs which could greatly improve their day-to-day lives, health outcomes and longevity, wouldn't you agree?

The American Kidney Fund reported that, "Thirty-one million Americans are living with Chronic Kidney Disease, including more than 636,000 individuals who have Kidney Failure and rely on Dialysis or Transplantation to survive." Well, each year the Federal Government appropriates funding for Chronic Kidney Disease research. Currently, groundbreaking work is being conducted on the Artificial Implantable Kidney, Wearable Artificial Kidney, Kidney Transplant Longevity, and Immunosuppressant Alternatives. However, this type of research may not continue without appropriate funding

Therefore, YOU along with other members and supporters of the Chronic Kidney Disease Community are encouraged to tell your members of Congress to support additional funding that will help to improve health outcomes and strengthen quality of care for individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients.
