Heparin Shortage Alarming For Chronic Kidney Disease And Dialysis Patients

Most Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients are familiar with Heparin as the Anticoagulation Drug given at the start or mid-Dialysis Treatment to maintain a stable blood cleaning and prevent their blood from clotting. If blood clots, then it makes treatments more difficult, poor cleanings, longer treatment times, more frequent alarming, and if you cannot return the blood due to clotting then a patient can lose as much as one cup of blood (the most that is out of a dialysis patient at any one time during Dialysis) - which can cause a patient to feel weak and out-of-it after treatment. That is why many patients are alarmed to learn that there is a shortage of Heparin, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Sign the following petition to encourage Congress to investigate and identify solutions to the Heparin Shortage.

It appears that the Anticoagulant that is used heavily by hospitals for multiple applications and by Dialysis Facilities is having an issue with China’s Heparin export market. Apparently, supplies going to Thailand and Hong Kong are cutting into the United States' much-needed supplies. It is not clear why Thailand and Hong Kong have become leading export markets for China, but it is very concerning for Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients who require Heparin to safely conduct Treatments.

The exports to Thailand and Hong Kong were also unusual since they have gone from no exports a decade ago to more than 40,000 kg exported to Thailand and 28,000 kg to Hong Kong in 2016. The biggest concern is that the Chinese Heparin supply that the United States has been relying on appears to be shrinking which could cause a rapid depletion and affect the risks of a severe Heparin Shortage.

This must be averted (avoided)! Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients have enough on their plates trying to stay as healthy as possible while monitoring possible breakthroughs, without having to worry about whether they will have enough medication to safely conduct their Dialysis Treatments. Congress has already begun a probe to look into the cause and solution to this Heparin shortage. Sign the below petition so this important issue does not lose steam and request a rapid solution to the Heparin Shortage before it begins to impact Dialysis patient care:
