Most dialysis patients enjoy eating fruits and vegetables as do most people. But unlike healthy people, late stage CKD patients and those on dialysis have to be careful with the kinds they eat because it is dangerous to consume too much Potassium.

While fruits and vegetables are considered relatively low in Phosphorus and contain less than 110mg per serving, excess Potassium is seen as a dangerous side effect that can lead to irregular heart beat or even a heart attack in CKD patients. According to the Nephrology Physician Website, high potassium fruits and vegetables include: artichoke, carrots, collard greens, pumpkin, parsnips, Brussels sprouts, yams, Swiss Chards, sun-dried tomatoes, apricots, avocados, cantaloupe, dates, bananas, oranges, prunes, raisins, watermelons, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

Therefore you may need to make adjustments in managing your diet with the help of your dietician by choosing fruits and vegetables that contain less than 150mg of Potassium per serving. These would be alfalfa sprouts, green beans, cabbage, cauliflower, blueberries, apples, cranberries,
peaches, pears, grapes, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, plums, pineapples, garlic, hominy, lettuce, onions, parsley, peppers, snow peas, turnips, eggplants, and cucumbers.

Remember that because you have CKD you have to make changes to your regular diet including limiting fluids, eating a low protein diet, and restricting salt, Phosphorus and Potassium.
