Like any good Chronic Kidney Disease or Diabetes patient you have probably cut your favorite foods to fit strictly within the parameters of your Renal or Diabetic diet. Eating "one raisin" outside of your diet may cause you pause, and when you cannot manage the rigidity, you just give up. Caving into your cravings and worrying about it "later."

If this describes you in any way, then you may be having such a difficult time with your diet because it is not balanced. I cannot tell you how many people with Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetes email everyday asking how they can get their "numbers under control," and requesting my father's assistance as a 15 year dialysis patient to help advise them on how they can "improve their diet."

KidneyBuzz.com never offers specific advice and always recommends talking to your Dietitian, but we also strongly recommend for you to be an active part of your meal planning. Even Registered Dietitians, who are experts in healthy eating, eat many foods that "will probably surprise you," ABC News reported on Tuesday, Aril 1st, 2014. Some are everyday foods you didn't think were healthy (but actually are), while others are definite splurges; just done smartly and without guilt. These include coffee, hot chocolate, eggs, raisins, bacon, guacamole and more.

Do not misunderstand. You should not take this information and go cook a bunch of bacon with a large sugary side of hot chocolate. That would be absolutely WRONG for those with Chronic Kidney Disease and/or Diabetes. What you should take this article as, is an "Ahha!," and go talk to your Dietitian as soon as possible to determine how you can better balance your diet. This will likely include substitutions such as pure maple syrup to sweeten your coffee and coco; new practices such as leaching vegetables; correcting myths like eggs being bad for your health; and clearly defining appropriate serving sizes.

Many long-time Dialysis patients may be shocked to learn that they can consume foods like guacamole or raisins (even though they are high in potassium) IF the serving portions are kept strictly within safe limits. Also, by using clever substitutes those with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and Diabetes can enjoy many of their favorite staples. The key, said Registered Dietitian, Robin Russell, "is that if you’re careful, if you read your labels and measure your foods, you can have a much wider variety of foods in your diet."
