"Dialysis patients are at extraordinarily high risk for death," stated the Research Organization, Up To Date. The leading cause of death in those with Chronic Kidney Disease is Cardiac (Heart) Disease - accounting for approximately 40% of all-cause mortality in patients receiving either Hemodialysis or Peritoneal Dialysis. New findings suggest that Heart Disease in general may be improved by cutting deadly Trans Fats which are currently hidden in commonly enjoyed foods.

Trans Fats are manmade fats and once consumed the synthetic fats raise bad cholesterol (Low-Density Lipoproteins - LDLs) while reducing protective good cholesterol (High-Density Lipoproteins - HDLs) in the blood. According to the SF Gate, Trans Fats "increase your risk of developing Heart Disease and Stroke."

The United States Food and Drug Administration seems to agree since they announced that all Trans Fats must be removed from the food supply by 2018. The New York Times suggested that this move is "expected to save thousands of lives a year."

You may ask, "If Trans Fats are so bad, then why are they even used in the first place?" Well, trans fats were first sold in grocery stores in the form of margarine (yes the margarine many have in their refrigerator right now) and shortening. Since then, food manufactures have used Trans Fats as an inexpensive means to "to increase the shelf life, stability, texture and maintain freshness of their products," reported the SF Gate.

An entire list of all foods containing Trans Fats would be too long but includes cookies, crackers, packaged snacks, baked products, frozen pies, frozen pizza and coffee creamers. As Chronic Kidney Disease patients who conduct Dialysis may know, Large Dialysis Organizations such as DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. recommend that they "avoid Trans Fats."

Although, you should discuss food options with your Dietitians, for quick reference patients may consider cooking with olive oil and canola oil. Also, foods that are generally good for Dialysis patients include:
- Tuna
- Salmon
- Herring
- Apples
- Green beans
- Strawberries
- Chicken (baked, grilled or broiled)
- Lean beef/pork
- Rice cakes
- Unsalted pretzels
