Facebook Is Continually Connecting CKD & Dialysis Patients With Kidney Donors: Can It Work For You?

When it comes to the Kidney Transplant Waiting List, the figures are staggering: Over 100,000 people awaiting a Kidney Transplant which takes approximately five (5) to seven (7) years and nearly 5,000 patients die every year while on the list. Now Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients are starting to fight back by using a new strategic method which is growing in popularity - Facebook.

In one of the latest success stories, Ellen Sherman (a retired High School teacher) needed a Kidney Transplant after battling Chronic Kidney Disease for thirteen (13) years. After two and a half (2.5) years on the Kidney Transplant Waiting List she decided that it may benefit her to share her story on Facebook.

Guess what? It did benefit Ellen immensely by sharing her story on Facebook, because after telling a former student of her need, he shared her story with his Friends and a stranger, Amy Waggoner, stepped forward. Amy was not just a complete stranger to Ellen, she did not even live in the same state as her. Thus, why would she donate a kidney to Ellen?  "When I saw this, something beyond myself compelled me to go get the test," said Amy. "I can't explain that. I would never normally do something like that."

Therefore, in most cases it can help Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients in sharing their stories and a desire for a Living Kidney Donor on Facebook and other outlets. Dr. Michael Goldstein (Jackson Memorial Hospital) along with other Kidney Transplant Surgeons across the country are reinforcing the fact that Facebook is effective in helping with the process of connecting Kidney Donors with patients in need of a Kidney Transplant. "It's an amazing story that this kind of matched up through Facebook," said Dr. Goldstein. Fortunately, Ellen's story is becoming less unique and more commonplace as Facebook is helping to pair a rapidly growing number of Chronic Kidney Disease and Dialysis patients with Altruistic Living Kidney Donors by sharing their stories.

Friends, do not become a casualty - take action! Those who are considering sharing their stories on Facebook should not hesitate since it takes time to connect with a viable donor and the testing process can be lengthy in some cases. It took Amy a year and a half (1.5 years) before she finished testing and was approved to donate to Ellen. Clearly, time is of the essence.
