When you are on dialysis, your body loses protein which can cause Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients to become sluggish, tired and increases their risk for infections. Every month your albumin level (type of protein in the blood) is tested to measure your overall nutritional well-being. With the right levels of albumin, you lower your risk for complications like infections, hospitalization and increase your energy levels.
Often overlooked, dialysis patients usually need to incorporate high-quality proteins into their diet. While your Dietitian may recommend energy or protein supplements when your albumin levels are low, they can become quite expensive and add to your medication burden. What's more is by eating lean meat, eggs, fish, and chicken you can improve your albumin levels and overall health as well as reduce your risk of complications such as infections, weakness, and fatigue.
