Cocktails That Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Should Opt To Drink This New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve is just around the corner and often to ring in the New Year, many will share champaign or a cocktail with friends and family. However, when it comes to drinking alcohol and those with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), it is not recommended. This is because alcohol can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, and other medical problems for CKD patients. Hence, while alcohol is not recommended at all for CKD patients, especially those who have begun dialysis, there are alternatives for those with CKD to feel fully included in the festivities.

While you mix and mingle with friends and family, feel free to help yourself to a nice glass of Apple Cider (warm or chilled). Apple cider is an excellent compromise because it contains none of the toxins in alcohol as well as very limited potassium, phosphorus and sodium. Also, recent findings suggest that the same apples used to make cider can protect CKD patients from strokes and prevent Cardiovascular deaths, for which those with CKD are at elevated risk.

Another very recent study found that Non-alcoholic Red Wine lowers blood pressure after 4 weeks. High blood pressure affects 80% of people with CKD and can lead to increased risk of Cardiovascular Disease, stroke, Kidney Transplant failure and death. By substituting Non-alcoholic Red Wine for another alcoholic beverage, you will not only be avoiding the negative side effects of alcohol, but you will also gain important health benefits.

Cranberry juice was also found to lower blood pressure levels in those with CKD. In fact, a 2012 study revealed that cranberry juice had an average decrease in systolic (first number) and diastolic (second number) blood pressure of 3 mm Hg each. Researchers note that this 3 mm Hg drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure is significant since most non-medicinal blood pressure lowering strategies often result in a decrease in systolic blood pressure, but not diastolic. Cranberries provide additional benefits to those with CKD including lowering bad cholesterol and strengthening the immune system. Thus, this would be an excellent alternative for CKD patients who care to enjoy a drink with their friends and family.
