Chronic Kidney Disease Patient Found Unresponsive After Leaving Dialysis Treatment

Chronic Kidney Disease patients can often feel the effect of Dialysis on their bodies. Drained and depleted after treatment, many may feel ill or "wiped out," but do their very best to push through their physical pain and discomfort in order to avoid disturbing others and complete their goals for the day - best they can. That is what Duncan Price, of Grant Park, appears to have attempted. However, he was unfortunately found dead at Fresenius Kidney Care Center in Steger (Chicago’s south suburbs) late in the night, according to Steger police.

Mr. Price went to his Dialysis Center on the morning of his treatment at around 10:30 a.m., according to Deputy Chief Patrick Rossi. While Mr. Price completed his routine treatment and left the treatment room around 2:45 p.m., something went very awry shortly thereafter. The patient was last seen "walking out to the lobby of the facility with a blanket and pillow, which he placed on a chair next to a nearby bathroom," reported NBC Chicago News. Although no one saw it, at some point authorities said Duncan Price entered the bathroom.

The 74 year-old-man was not seen again until his concerned daughter, Wendy Price, rushed into town due to her father not answering her many attempts to contact him. When she saw his car in the parking lot of his Fresenius Kidney Care Center she thought he may have been admitted to the local hospital. When she called and there was no record of her father having an issue that day, she posted an urgent message on Facebook about her search for her father - Duncan Price - and concern for his safety.

The search came to a rapid end when Wendy Price's Facebook post reached someone who knew the assistant manager of the Dialysis Center, who arrived at the facility to open it for police and family. Mr. Price was discovered in the bathroom and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Wendy Price told police her dad was sick with flu-like symptoms the day before and had sought medical assistance for that. Fresenius Medical Care extended their condolences stating, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our patient and extend our heartfelt condolences to the patient’s family." Kate Dobbs (Fresenius Medical Care Spokeswoman ) said in a statement that, "privacy laws prevent us from sharing information about any patient's care, we are working diligently to determine the cause of their passing and remain focused on the well-being and safety of all patients who entrust us with their care."

The passing of Mr. Price reminds all Dialysis patients to remain on heightened alert even after Dialysis Treatments end.
