Chronic Kidney Disease And Diabetic Patients Should Be Aware Of Diabetes Risk To Statin Users

Renal and Urology News reported an increase in body weight within a year of taking Atorvastatin (a cholesterol-lowering medication) which is associated with a higher risk of worsening and new-onset Type II Diabetes. According to a recent study published online in The American Journal of Cardiology, the complication is even further emphasized in people with "stable Coronary Artery Disease" (Heart Disease) such as Chronic Kidney Disease patients and those with Diabetes.

Researchers found that 650 patients out of the total 7,595 individuals studied developed Type II Diabetes after taking Atorvastatin. The main cause of increased Diabetes rates in this population of statin users is weight gain which was significant after 1 year of starting their statin regimen.  “Our study highlights the importance of weight control as a lifestyle measure to prevent statin-related NODM [Type II Diabetes],” the authors concluded.
