Since KidneyBuzz.com announced that the famous singer Selena Gomez received a Kidney Transplant without ever having to begin Dialysis, patients emailed non-stop and asked, "How did Selena Gomez get her transplant so fast?" Well, the answer is simple: A Living Kidney Donor. Selfless donation from Living Kidney Donors is on the rise and Selena's Kidney Donor, Francia Raisa - a celebrity in her own right - is now discussing her experience with donation. The actress, Ms Raisa (29-years-old), said at the world premiere screening for the Freeform show, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, “We’re doing great.” She gave further insight by telling Us Weekly, “I’m feeling really good and I’m really happy to be here,” after courageously donating one of her kidneys to her best friend, Selena Gomez (25-years-old).
Gomez needed the Kidney Transplant due to complications with Lupus (a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs) and her friend was there to help. Even now Selena Gomez becomes emotional as she discusses the matter because of that fact that Ms. Raisa chose to give a piece of herself to her.
Raisa, who is of Mexican and Honduran descent, wore a fashionable crop top (see above) that showed off the scar on her torso from the surgery at a recent movie premier. It is such a small incision that made such a HUGE difference - Gomez credited Raísa with saving her life. “Because she did. That’s it,” she told Today‘s Savannah Guthrie (News Anchor).
Many patients find themselves in Selena Gomez's position where they know that they need a Kidney Transplant but, "I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life," said Selena. That is why it was such a kind-hearted act when Francia volunteered and did it!
“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa,” Gomez wrote in an online post. “She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis." While Selena's story is touching, it is not unique. There are over 100,000 patients awaiting a Kidney Transplant and nearly 5,000 die every year and never get a call.
Modern Living Kidney Donation is (1) very safe with careful testing of a potential donor's overall health background before approval to donate, and (2) lifesaving for anyone that receives a Kidney Transplant as well as life-changing for the donor knowing that she/he saved another person's life.
