The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering is directly linked with the National Institutes of Health which is a branch of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. B. Joseph Guglielmo (PharmD, dean of the UCSF School of Pharmacy) said, "The grant from NIBIB is a striking affirmation of the promise associated with this device, as well as National Institutes of Health's confidence in the ultimate success of The Kidney Project."
Researchers associated with the Artificial Implantable Kidney have remained very clear with their ultimate goal: Make the Implantable Artificial Kidney available to patients. Since funding was one of the largest obstacles to achieving the clear objective, this six (6) million dollar boost may greatly assist bringing the product to market.
Moreover, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sees a lot of potential in the Artificial Implantable Kidney and in September included the device into the FDA’s new "Expedited Access Pathway" program to speed development, evaluation, and review the artificial kidney. “The new program brings FDA reviewers, scientists, and leadership together with our team to define a roadmap to regulatory approval and product launch,” said Lead Researcher, Dr. Shuvo Roy.
Surprisingly, KidneyBuzz.com still receives emails and Social Media comments stating: "Is this real?" As well as, "This Artificial Implantable Kidney will never be available." Well, these new developments showing steady progress and success should put all doubt to rest. The Artificial Implantable Kidney is in the process of evaluation and launch and it stands to help over 600,000 Chronic Kidney Disease patients who are currently suffering Kidney Failure.
