KidneyBuzz.com continues to be bombarded with questions about the Artificial Implantable Kidney. Please keep them coming (firstname.lastname@example.org)! The following are answers to a few of the most common questions that we have been asked As we are preparing for the upcoming Human Trials we find these questions to be both timely and very informative:
Question #1: How do I sign up for the Human Trials?
Answer: If you are interested in potentially participating in the Human Trials, please complete the below form and a member of our team will follow up with a call. Please note that we can’t guarantee anyone’s participation since this is not an official wait-list.
Question #2: Will the Artificial Implantable Kidney be able to generate Erythropoietin (a glycoprotein that controls red blood cell production to prevent Anemia) and eliminate the need for artificial EPO injections?
Answer: The cells used in the Artificial Implantable Kidney are different cells than the cells that secrete Erythropoietin. Hence, Anemia management therapies may still be necessary.
Question #3: What kind of kidney function would you expect to see once this device gets implanted? How much of an increase in eGFR (the percent of kidney function) might occur?
Answer: While this will be confirmed as research progresses, it is anticipated that patients will have approximately 20-30% function with this device implanted.
Question #4: When are Human Trials for the Artificial Implantable Kidney expected to begin?
Answer: According to the University of California San Francisco (developers of the Artificial Implantable Kidney), the Human Trails are expected to begin in early 2018, provided they receive enough funding.
