Safe Sweets For Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetics That Will Not Spook Their Dietitians

Alright let's be honest, Halloween is just around the corner (or recently passed depending on when you are reading this article), and temptation is lurking everywhere, right? It can be a bit depressing when you see your favorite treat and cannot enjoy it, or even enjoy any alternative sweet.

What Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetic patients should know is that they CAN eat something "sweet" on Halloween, just like everybody else. However, they should plan ahead to work the treat into their balanced Renal and Diabetic meal plans. Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetics should discuss incorporating a Halloween goodies into their diets. According to the Diabetes Center, individuals with Diabetes specifically should " ensure they get enough insulin to cover the carbohydrates in the candy."

First, try alternative treats such as Rainbow-colored Goldfish crackers, raisins, frozen grapes and popcorn. Other Kidney-Friendly sweets include: Hard candy, Sweetarts, Jolly Ranchers, LifeSavers, Lemonheads,  candy canes, sugar free hard candy (ideal for people with diabetes), charms sour balls, lollipops, Smarties® (known as Rockets® in Canada), Runts, Mike and Ikes, gumdrops, jelly beans, Gummy Bears and fruit slices, Starburst, Hot Tamales, Peeps marshmallows, Now and Later, Jawbreakers, Conversation hearts (usually found around Valentine’s Day), Air Heads, Laffy Taffy, Peach and Apple rings, Sour Patch Kids, Skittles, and Shortbread cookie-type candy.
