Well, now research has shown a great way to combat the common side effects of Dialysis, "Aerobic exercise may be an effective natural 'medicine,'” suggested DailyRX.com. More detailed findings from the Dialysis patient specific study, published by the American Society of Nephrology include, "Those who did aerobic workouts had fewer symptoms of depression, better health-related quality of life and were 40% less likely to die during the study than those who did little or no exercise." What is even more impressive is the fact that the previously listed benefits were similar regardless of a Dialysis patient's age, sex, length of time they'd been on dialysis, and diabetes status, according to the study.
Isn't that great? You may think, "Yeah, well you have to lift heavy weights and be super flexible for Yoga to achieve those health benefits." Fortunately that is NOT the case! Simply, aerobic exercise is an exercise that uses large muscle groups repetitively for a sustained amount of time. Does that make sense? For instance, walking, riding a bike, running/playing around outside with your children/grandchildren, or even a bit of dancing all count as aerobic exercises. In fact, the study found that strength and flexibility exercises did not provide the same benefits as strict aerobic workouts.
Aerobic exercise does not always have to be a planned workout. Walking around the grocery store while shopping or even sweeping your home can suffice as your aerobic exercise for the day.
