25.8 million Americans have diabetes and over 40% of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients are diabetic; of which 15% to 20% of patients became diabetic after receiving their Kidney Transplant. In a Cambridge University study, researchers found that eating yogurt four or five times a week may reduce an individual's risk of diabetes by as much as 28%. Consuming fermented dairy products could cut diabetes risk by 24%.
A significant reason why there was such a positive correlation between eating yogurt and diabetes risk reduction was the fact that people who eat yogurt also eat fewer unhealthy desserts and snacks, researchers found. They further noted that by replacing a serving of chips with a serving of yogurt, one can reduce their risk of diabetes by as much as 47%. Still, yogurt itself contains valuable vitamins such as vitamin K and other probiotics which are well known to protect against diabetes.
