Wayne University recent study found that by supplementing vitamin E in the diet of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis it significantly improved their lipid profiles (blood tests that serves as an initial broad medical screening tool for abnormalities in cholesterol). This is important news to the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) community because according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and stroke is the third leading cause. Here is the connection, CKD patients are 23 times more likely to develop Heart Disease which is the leading cause of death in the CKD Community regardless of patient age, stage of kidney disease or if they have had a transplant.

The University's randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled, test included 81 participants who were assigned vitamin E-rich supplements or a placebo (an inactive substance). Although researchers found no difference in nutrition or inflammation in CKD patients when comparing the treatment group vs. the placebo group. However, the vitamin E treatment was associated with improvements in the lipid profiles of participants when compared with the placebo group, researchers found.

Previous research did not show an association between vitamin E-rich supplements and improved lipid profiles, but that may be due to the fact that other studies were done over a “shorter duration," and had a "smaller dose and smaller sample size.”
